KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): About 19,000 ballots from 32 polling sites in western Herat and southern Kandahar provinces have been invalidated in the wake of alleged fraud, officials said on Wednesday.

After a review of ballots from 59 sites, votes from 24 areas were declared null and void, the Independent Election Commission (IECC) chief in Herat, Abdullah Sherzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said: “Votes from the sites number about 14,000 and most of them were cast in Chasht, Gulran, Kihsan, Shindand, Oba and Zindajan districts.” He added 103 complaints had been recorded against the runoff elections in the province.

Of them, 68 complaints were registered against Dr. Abdullah, 28 against Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and seven against both, Sherzai explained. According to Sherzai, 29 complaints have been recorded about rigging in Herat at IECC main office in Kabul.

On the other hand, people asked the complaints commission to show neutrality and refuse bowing to pressures. Resident Farid Ahmad said: “We urge the commission to demonstrate impartiality, respect people people’s and separate genuine votes from the fake ones.”

Meanwhile, IECC chief for Kandahar Marwan Waziri said votes from eight polling sites in Spin Boldak, Takhta Pul and Arghistan districts had been nullified. The invalidated votes (4,800) had been cast for Ahmadzai.

He said 134 complaints had been filed against second round of presidential elections in Kandahar. Of them, 115 complaints were registered in Kandahar and the remaining in Kabul.

Based to the complaints, 75 ballot boxes from 17 centres in Arghandab, Khakrez, Takhta Pul, Nish, Shah Walikot, Arghistan, Zherai and Panjwai districts and Kandahar City have been quarantined.
