3 Herat port officials killed, Taliban deny hand

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Three dry port officials were killed by Talibaninfo-icon insurgents near the border with Iran in western Herat province on Monday, but the rebels denied hand in the massacre.

Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Islam Qala dry port employees were heading to their office when they came under attack from Taliban militants in Ahmadabad area of Kohsan district this moring.

He said the slain officials included customs detective chief, biometric system head and a policewoman.

No one has so far arrested in connection with the incident, which was confirmed by Herat police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada.

Local officials accused the Taliban of killing the officials, but the group’s spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said they had no link with the killings. He said the officials might be killed by robbers.
