Aug 24, 2017 - 09:29

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon have overrun the Zana Khan district of southern Ghazni province following fierce clashes with the Afghan security forces, officials acknowledged on Thursday.

A provincial council member, Abdul Jamay Jamay, told Pajhwok Afghan News the security forces and the Taliban had been engaged in heavy clashes in Zana Khan district since Wednesday night.

He said the insurgents captured the district and seized two tanks, a number of Ranger pick-ups and took three policemen hostage.

Mohammad Arif Noori, the governor’s spokesman, confirmed heavy clashes in Zana Khan district took place last night. But he had no more information about the town’s fate.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed the district had been captured by the fighters. Two years back, the district headquarters was shifted close to the capital of Ghazni for security reasons.

More details to follow.
